Radiation Pattern Concept
An antenna radiation pattern describes how power is distributed in space. Mathematically it can be written as:

Why Pattern Diversity Helps
In wireless environments signals often experience multipath fading. When antennas have different radiation patterns, each antenna receives a different version of the signal.
