1. Cost of Living and Expenditure

Delhi is generally more expensive than Kolkata, particularly when it comes to accommodation in many popular areas. However, the actual cost depends heavily on the neighbourhood, type of accommodation, and lifestyle.

For a student or a single person, it may be possible to find a basic room or shared accommodation in Kolkata for around ₹3,000–₹5,000 per month in some areas. In Delhi, a similar room or accommodation can often cost ₹6,000–₹10,000 or more, especially in areas with good connectivity to colleges, offices, and metro stations.

Food and entertainment can also be more expensive in Delhi, particularly at restaurants, cafés, pubs, and premium establishments. Kolkata, on the other hand, is widely regarded as a relatively affordable metropolitan city, especially for local food.


Overall: Kolkata can be more budget-friendly, while Delhi offers a wider range of accommodation and lifestyle options but can become expensive depending on where you live.


2. Language

Language is another major difference.

In Delhi, Hindi is the most widely spoken language in everyday life. Because Delhi is a highly diverse city, English, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, and several other Indian languages are also commonly heard.

In Kolkata, Bengali is the dominant local language. English and Hindi are also widely understood, particularly in commercial areas, educational institutions, and among younger people.

For someone who does not know Bengali, Kolkata is still relatively easy to navigate because Hindi and English are commonly used in many public and commercial settings.
